Day Five Royal Naval Dockyards

Today we decided to head north. We had acquired brochures on the historic British Navel Dockyards in Chatham and decided that since we were basically interested in ships of any type this would be of great interest to us. What we thought was going to be a two hour tour however, turned into an entire afternoon. We learned much about the ships built at the Royal Dockyards and about their history and the role they played in defense of England. The tour also included hands on exhibit on rope making. Charlie actually participated in the making of a length of rope. After we left the dockyards we drove to Rochester which was nearby. There we visited the Rochester Cathedral which is one of the largest Cathedrals we have ever seen. Absolutely massive! We were fortunate to sit in on a rehearsal of the boy’s choir which was accompanied by the main church organ. Absolutely breathtaking! The stained glass windows in this magnificent church would take over an hour to appreciate.

Rochester also has its own castle. We observed this structure only from the outside, but I have to say it is most impressive. Over twelve stories high it is the tallest castle in England.

By now it was time to head home. Along the way we stopped in a wonderful little pub called “The Little Brown Jug”. It was by far the most picturesque place we have ever been in. Our meal was delicious, truly the crowning glory to a most delightful day. As we write this message we are quite tired and ready to turn in to rest up for tomorrow’s adventures.

The weather today was perfect. Blue skies and cool temperatures, perfect weather for sightseeing.
